Blancpain Watch Company – Summary

Blancpain, founded in 1735 in Villeret, Switzerland, by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain, is recognized as the world’s oldest surviving watch brand. For more than two centuries, it remained family-owned, producing finely crafted mechanical timepieces. The brand is known for its commitment to mechanical watchmaking, famously declaring it has never made a quartz watch and never will.

Key milestones include the 1930 creation of the first automatic wristwatch for women (the Rolls) and the 1953 launch of the Fifty Fathoms, one of the first modern professional dive watches. The quartz crisis of the 1970s temporarily ended operations, but Jean-Claude Biver revived Blancpain in 1983, focusing on traditional craftsmanship and grand complications.

Today, under Swatch Group ownership (since 1992), Blancpain produces limited numbers of high-end watches, including the Villeret dress line and the Fifty Fathoms dive line, all featuring in-house mechanical movements and fine hand-finishing. The brand remains a symbol of Swiss horological heritage, innovation, and exclusivity.
